This protozoa is found in many vertebrate hosts and is typically acquired by ingestion of the cyst form of the parasite found in the feces of infected animals and in water contaminated with the feces of infected animals.
Cysts are formed in the intestine and are passed in the feces. Often the only symptom is intermittent diarrhea that is light-colored and may contain mucus.
Treatment involves administration of antiprotozoal medicine.
