Weimaraners are active, intelligent dogs that enjoy engaging in events and activities that keep them challenged and alert. There are many different organized activities sponsored by dog clubs all over the United States. Some of the more popular events for Weimaraners include show events, hunt and ratings tests, obedience, and agility.

Show Events

Showing a Weimaraner can be an exciting sport for people of all ages and capabilities. The primary goal is to have your dog become a champion. To become an AKC champion, a dog must win 15 or more points under three or more judges. 1 to 5 points are awarded at a show. The number of points awarded at a show is based on geographic area and dog breed and is based on the number of dogs and bitches of the breed that compete at the show. To insure that every champion has competed in large entry shows, each must win at least 2 majors (shows that award 3 - 5 points) under 2 different judges.

Hunt and Ratings Tests

The Weimaraner was developed by the Germans to meet the needs of 19th century foresters. They developed a breed with the following qualities:

Field trials are a wonderful way to see these qualities in action. The San Francisco Bay Weimaraner Club sponsors several field events throughout the year.

Obedience

An obedient Weimaraner willingly complies with the desires of its owner and responds to his commands while the obedience Weimaraner knows a carefully choreographed routine that is performed during obedience trials.

There are 3 AKC obedience titles, each more difficult than the previous. The first level is called Companion Dog (CD) and indicates a dog that obeys basic commands that are useful in daily life. All commands require a simple response. The next level is the Companion Dog Excellent (CDX) and is characterized by complex responses to some commands. The final level is Utility Dog (UD) and all commands require a complex response.

Dogs that have achieved their UD can then win points towards becoming an Obedience Trial Champion.

Agility

The primary objective of agility training is simply pure fun! Learning to negotiate obstacles and hurdles improves self-confidence while the fast pace and excitement of a timed trial improves overall enthusiasm.
