OBTAINING AN AKC ILP NUMBER
FOR YOUR
UNREGISTERED WEIMARANER
By Chris Weidmeier
Our Weimaraner Daisy joined us in July 2004 and
when she was less than a year old.
She had spent her time in three other homes and came to
us with “baggage”. She turned our garden into something that resembled
a minefield, and took every opportunity to run out of an open
gate, though where she was running to is beyond us.
Our offer of lots of love, regular meals, and a playmate
(our other Weimaraner, Harley) finally convinced her that our
home is a great place to be and now it’s hard to pry her off the
sofa.
Having Daisy join our family meant that she had
to learn the basic obedience commands so we enrolled her into
a novice class. She excelled and finished first in her class.
She has a great aptitude for obedience so I decided that
AKC competition would be a fun way for us to spend time.
A dog must either be registered with AKC or have
an Independent Listing Privilege (ILP) number with AKC before
they can be entered into an obedience competition.
As Daisy was not AKC registered, we had to obtain an ILP
number. An ILP number allows unregistered dogs of registerable
breeds to compete in the following AKC performance and companion
events:
- Agility
Trials
- Hunt
Tests

- Junior
Showmanship
- Obedience
Trials
- Rally
Trials
- Tracking Tests
